Curatorial Context
This work forms part of a rare group of original pieces from the early and formative period of Prof. Michael Zobel’s practice, whose contribution to contemporary jewellery and metalwork has exerted a sustained and internationally disseminated influence since the 1960s and 1970s.
Within this context, Zobel’s practice is recognised for its fundamental shift from conventional goldsmithing toward a sculptural and conceptually driven understanding of jewellery, in which material, form, and corporeal relation are treated as inseparable conditions of the work.
The present piece belongs to this early phase of production, in which Zobel’s formal language was actively evolving through direct engagement with material experimentation and structural transformation. As such, it stands not as repetition of a style, but as an original articulation within a developing artistic vocabulary that would later inform a wide range of subsequent interpretations and adaptations internationally.
Each work from this period exists as a singular object, situated at the intersection of jewellery, sculpture, and functional form.
